A wedding is a joyous time for any family. Weddings are institutions, which allow two people to "tie the knot" and unite for a lifetime. During this festive occasion, relatives and friends of the couple select gifts that convey their good wishes. Showering the newlyweds with gifts is a way of expressing love and fondness and wishing them a successful journey through life together.
Bridal registries are a service offered by many department stores. It is a term used to refer to an arrangement, wherein couples are able to select gifts they would like to receive, before the wedding.
A couple that is to get married in the near future can survey the items available in the store. After a detailed study, they can shortlist the items they would like to receive from guests. This list is made available to guests prior to the wedding date.
When an item is purchased, it is deleted from the list maintained by the store for that particular wedding. This works well in most cases. The main advantage is that newlyweds are able to receive gifts they would like, and get the things they need for their new home.
The system is very efficient as it eliminates the possibility of a couple receiving similar gifts from different guests. Wedding guests also find this very convenient, as they do not have to wonder if another invitee has already gifted the same item. They can scan the list available at the store and select a gift that would be unique and also one that is desired by the couple.
The pioneer of the concept of bridal registry was a Chicago-based department store known as Marshall Fields in 1924. Ever since, many other stores have ventured into introducing a bridal registry service.
However, there are many detractors of this concept.
Many old timers view bridal registries with distaste. They believe that this whole idea is similar to asking for gifts.
Etiquette generally states that gifts are never solicited, and seeking specific gifts can be seen as diluting the entire gesture of goodwill that gifts convey. For these reasons, many people have declined to adopt bridal registries. However, while some people will say this system is materialistic and claim it has done away with the charm of being surprised upon receiving a gift, the fact remains that it makes the act of selecting a gift for a wedding very simple.
